Roads Operator

Position Summary:

As a member of the Roads team, the Roads Operator is responsible for the maintenance and construction of City roads and infrastructure. This includes, but is not limited to, snow maintenance and clearing, general clean-up of debris on roadways, upkeep of equipment and vehicles, and equipment inspections.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provides operational expertise in the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of:
    • Maintenance and upkeep of equipment and vehicles: performs minor servicing and greasing, repairs and daily cleaning; reports any repairs required on equipment/vehicle to Roads Coordinator; logs time spent on tasks.
    • Maintenance of all City roads, and sidewalks:
  • Operating equipment including backhoes, excavators, skid steer, snowplowing, sanding and road grading or clean-up of debris etc.
  • Installation of street signage and maintenance
  • Installation of road markings
    • Equipment inspections: performs daily vehicle and equipment inspections; completing required documentation; monitors material and supply requirements.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge as required.
  • Appropriate and responsible use of confidential information; maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the City.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Grade 10 or GED.
  • 5 years of related and progressive experience in road maintenance and construction. 

Recommended Certifications and/or Documentation:

  • Certifications in Snowplow, Motor Grader, Excavator, Skid Steer.
  • Load Securement.
  • Intermediate first aid.

Required Certifications and/or Documentation:

  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake endorsement and Drive’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the City.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the City. 

Expected Skills and Attributes:

  • Strong mechanical aptitude.
  • Working knowledge of and ability to operate a variety of equipment and vehicles.
  • Working knowledge of the City’s OH&S guidelines.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain communication to anticipate and prevent potential problems; develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships.
  • Basic knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook).

Working Conditions:

  • On-call shift rotation which will require work in the evenings, on weekends and holidays.
  • Frequent and repetitive motions and positions such as standing, crouching, kneeling, bending.
  • Exposure to dirt, oil, grease, etc., often outdoors.
  • Operating equipment occasionally during inclement weather. 
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs.

Position Type: Full Time  

Location: Community Operations  

Compensation: Pay Grade will be determined by position placement.

Pay: $31.78/hr. (you'll find the detailed information in Appendix A of the draft collective agreement)

Days of Work: Monday to Friday but subject to change
