Seasonal Waste Operator

Position Summary:

As a member of the Waste Management team, this position is responsible for the safe and reliable curbside collection of solid waste, recycling and organics, while safely operating the use of City vehicles.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Operate (ASL) automated side loader collection truck with repetitive arm and hand motions.
  • Travel a designated collection route each day to collect waste, recycling and organic carts.
  • Maintenance and upkeep of equipment and vehicles, e.g., minor servicing (following manufacturer’s instructions), repairs and daily cleaning; perform daily equipment and vehicle inspections; report any repairs required on equipment or vehicles to the Supervisor; log time spent on tasks.
  • Safely operate vehicles or material-moving equipment, including the associated equipment that compresses collected refuse.
  • Haul refuse, recyclables and organic materials to designated processing and disposal sites.
  • Climb ladders on collection truck vehicles to perform inspections.
  • Communicate delays, unsafe sites, accidents, equipment breakdowns, or other maintenance problems.
  • Clean vehicles and key components after routes have been completed.
  • Tag solid waste, recycling and organics carts to inform residents of problems such as contamination, overfilled, not placed properly.
  • Perform audits on waste, recycling, and organics carts with.
  • Inventory checks and scanning with our mobile Innova Suite application
  • Solid understanding of regulations, policies, and procedures pertaining to waste and recycling.
  • Notify the appropriate individuals of emergencies, problems or hazards. Ensure hazard assessments, accident or incident reports are completed.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participates in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reporting of near misses or incidents.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • One (1) year relative experience
  • Alberta Class 3 Commercial Driver’s Licence with Q Endorsement (Air Brake) or higher

Required Certifications and/or Documentation:

  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the City.
  • Recent 3-year Driver’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the City
  • Prefer Standard First Aid with CPR Level C and AED Certification

 

Expected Skills and Attributes:

  • Knowledge of various types of heavy-duty equipment.
  • Effective communication skills to convey information to dispatcher and customers.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office, e.g., Word, Excel and Outlook.

 

Working Conditions:

  • Required to participate in a scheduled, on-call rotation, providing after-hour on-call support with the availability to respond on evenings and weekends.
  • Physically demanding, (requires long periods of sitting in a vehicle, climbing in and out of vehicles, lifting, sweeping and shoveling debris).
  • Exposed to various weather conditions.
  • May encounter unpleasant interactions with residents and/or other stakeholders.
  • Stress associated with risk management, and the responsibility for the well–being and safety of citizens and City staff.
