We are hiring two (2) Plant Health Care Technician for the upcoming 2026 season:

 

  • One (1) position:          May 4, 2026 – August 28, 2026
  • One (1) position:          March 30, 2026 – August 28, 2026

 

Schedule: May-August - Monday to Friday 730AM-4PM

 

Position Summary:

  • As a member of the Parks team, the Plant Health Care Technician is responsible for providing seasonal labour in the implementation of the City’s Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Program, as well as arboriculture and parks maintenance duties in support of the City’s parks operations.

 

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide seasonal labour in the implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of parks and open spaces in the City of Chestermere.
  • Performs general park related tasks such as snow removal, garbage removal, supports special events and performs other park maintenance tasks.
  • IPM; Identifies and monitors pests on trees, shrubs, turf, perennial and annual plants and applicable water bodies. Mixes and applies pesticide as required and instructed by licensed applicators.  Ensures all pesticides used are accurately recorded daily adhering to the city’s IPM practices.
  • Arboriculture; Performs duties related to planting, pruning, monitoring and other maintenance of trees and shrubs.
  • Performs daily equipment checks, records inspections as required, performs daily maintenance on all equipment and vehicles, ensures equipment and vehicles are clean and reports any broken or faulty equipment to the Plant Health Care Coordinator.
  •  Provide assistance to other departments or employees as assigned. 
  • Appropriate and responsible use of confidential information; maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the city.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.

Education and Experience:

  • Grade 10 or GED preferred.
  • Experience applying pesticides considered an asset.
  • Experience in tree and shrub maintenance considered an asset.
  • Weed and Pest identification skills and knowledge considered an asset.

 

Required Certifications and/or Documentation:

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence and Driver’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.
  • Valid Standard First Aid CPR C and AED certification.

 

Expected Skills and Attributes:

  • Working knowledge of parks maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret pesticide labels.
  • Ability to operate appropriate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Basic verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic analytical and creative thinking skills, ability to solve problems, make decisions, negotiate and deal effectively with people.
  • Strong work ethic and highly motivated; ability to work in fast paced environment and respond to action requests in a timely manner.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs.
