We are hiring one (1) Class 1 Gardening Crew Lead for the upcoming 2026 season:
- One (1) position: March 30th - November 27th

Position Summary:
As a member of the Community Operations - Parks team, this position is responsible for leading the Class 1 Gardening Crew while providing seasonal assistance in the upkeep and maintenance of City parks, green spaces and seasonal displays.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- Leading a seasonal crew of up to 6 staff including transporting staff to location around the City.
- Park maintenance of Class 1 parks and green spaces.
- Detail-orientated gardening, picking litter, changing garbage cans.
- Preparing planters and flower beds for planting of flowers.
- Planning daily workload and priorities in conjunction with the Parks Crew Lead and Coordinator.
This position provides seasonal assistance in the attainment of annual goals and initiatives within the City of Chestermere’s Strategic Plan.

The Seasonal Class 1 Gardening Crew Lead represents the values and beliefs of the City of Chestermere, both internally and externally.
Main responsibilities:
- Demonstrate the City values of Collaboration, Humour and Fun, Integrity, Professionalism, and Accountability.
- Ensure a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participate in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits.
- Conducting and participating in safety meetings, toolbox meetings, daily vehicle inspections and hazard assessments
- Responsible for using confidential information appropriately and maintaining the confidentiality and security of all information related to the city.
- Seasonal Class 1 Gardening Worker accountabilities
- Provide seasonal labour in:
- Park maintenance of Class 1 parks and green spaces with a high level of attention to detail e.g. gardening duties which includes but not limited to weeding, edging, cultivating, deadheading flowers, backpack blowing, trimming, rototilling
- Planting flower displays, trees and shrubs as assigned.
- Maintaining cleanliness of the parks, picking litter, changing garbage cans,
- Equipment upkeep, e.g., keep equipment clean; report broken or faulty equipment to the Parks Coordinator.
- Pruning shrubs with the use of hedge trimmers and hand tools.
- Support safe operations while in the parks and on roadways.
- Conduct inventory of supplies needed.
- As required, participate in the assessment of the current and future needs of the parks, gathering input and feedback.
- As required, participate in the enhancement and implementation of City and Department Policies and Procedures within legislative, regulatory requirements and best practices.

Required education and experience:
- High School Diploma (minimum)
- Currently attending a post-secondary institution or completion (asset).
- Minimum 3 years previous landscape maintenance experience.
- Minimum 2 years leadership role.
Required knowledge, skills, and attributes:
- Required certifications and/or documentation
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License.
- Drivers Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
- Clear Criminal Record deemed satisfactory by the city.
- Valid Standard First Aid CPR C and AED certifications or obtain within 30 days of hiring.
- Expected skills and attributes
- Working knowledge of parks maintenance procedures.
- Ability to plan daily workload and priorities
- Analytical and creative thinking skills as a member of the Community Operations - Parks team, e.g., ability to solve problems, make decisions, negotiate and deal effectively with people.
- Communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form, e.g., maintain ongoing communication to anticipate and prevent potential problems, develop and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other seasonal staff, the public and other stakeholders.
- Strong work ethic and highly motivated, e.g., ability to work in a fast-paced environment and respond to action requests and competing deadlines in a timely matter.
- Ability to be self motivated and utilize time effectively to complete tasks while motivating the team.
- Ability to read and understand SDS sheets and cleaning product labels.
- Ability to lift 23 kgs/50lbs
- Ability to operate appropriate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Preferred skills and attributes
- Previous landscape maintenance experience (removing weeds, garbage, flowerbeds, etc.).
- Previous leadership and training roles.
- Horticulture knowledge and practices
Working Conditions:
- Majority of outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions.
- Regular, physically demanding work, including standing, walking, crouching for extended periods of time
- Regularly working within the community.
- Provide assistance to other departments or employees as needed.
- May encounter unpleasant interactions with members of the public and other stakeholders.
- Personal Protective Equipment required e.g. Steel toed boots
- Driving regularly between sites to perform duties.
