The City of Chestermere has an exciting opportunity for an Intergovernmental Relations (IGR) Advisor. The Intergovernmental Relations Advisor is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing strategies that advance the municipality’s interests with provincial, federal, regional, and Indigenous government partners. This role supports Council and senior administration by providing strategic advice, policy analysis, and advocacy support to strengthen the municipality’s position on key issues and secure favourable outcomes in intergovernmental matters.
Key Accountabilities:
Intergovernmental Relations & Advocacy
- Build and maintain effective relationships with officials from the Government of Alberta, Government of Canada, municipal associations, regional partners.
- Monitor provincial and federal legislation, policies, and funding programs that may impact the municipality.
- Support advocacy efforts by preparing briefing notes, position papers, presentations, and correspondence for Council and senior leadership.
- Coordinate the municipality’s participation in intergovernmental meetings, committees, conferences, and consultations.
Policy Research & Analysis
- Conduct research and analysis on emerging policy issues, regulatory changes, and intergovernmental initiatives.
- Provide strategic recommendations to Council and the Executive Leadership Team on opportunities, risks, and alignment with municipal priorities.
- Track and evaluate the effectiveness of intergovernmental strategies and provide regular updates.
Grant Coordination
- Identify provincial and federal funding opportunities that support municipal projects and strategic priorities.
- Lead or support the preparation of grant applications and reporting requirements in collaboration with internal departments.
- Maintain a centralized record of grant submissions, status updates, and compliance obligations.
Council & Administrative Support
- Prepare reports, briefing notes, and recommendations for Council and standing committees.
- Support Council’s participation in intergovernmental advocacy events.
- Provide administrative support for intergovernmental delegations, ministerial meetings, and advocacy campaigns.
- Attend events with the Mayor and Council and make introductions to Ministers and coordinate contact information.

Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Political Science, Public Administration, Law, Economics, or a related field is considered an asset.
- Master’s degree considered an asset.
- 4+ years of experience in government relations, public policy, municipal administration, or a related field.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License and Driver’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
- Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.
Expected Skills and Attributes:
- Strong understanding of municipal governance in Alberta, including the Municipal Government Act (MGA).
- Excellent political acumen and the ability to navigate complex intergovernmental environments.
- Exceptional communication, writing, and presentation skills.
- Strong analytical and research abilities.
- Ability to build collaborative working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities under tight deadlines.
- Ability to exercise sound business judgment and confidentiality.
- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Working Conditions:
- Occasional travel for intergovernmental meetings within Alberta
- Periodic after-hours work may be required to support urgent issues or ministerial priorities
- Long periods of sitting, reading and concentration.
- Regularly working with Council, the Mayor, and the CAO to advance community priorities.
- Regular attendance at Council meetings and conventions

Compensation: Pay Grade will be determined by position placement.
