Position Summary:
As a member of the Planning and Development team, the Development Assistant provides clerical services in support of the City’s overall operations and development. This includes, but is not limited to customer service, accepting and reviewing development, building and utility permits, and general administrative support.
Key Accountabilities:
- Responds to customer service inquiries; acts as the primary point of contact for phone inquiries and customers at the front desk; provides knowledgeable instruction for building and utility permit applications, development permit applications and regulations, relevant bylaws, policies and procedures; informs clients on submission requirements for applications.
- Reviews development and building permit application submissions to ensure all required documentation is included and accurate; creates files for applications; enters application information into the permitting software database.
- Reviews, processes and issues utility permits electronically through the permitting software database.
- Calculates permit fees and collects payment for permits and compliance stamp requests.
- Compiles packages for partial permit release; provides final checks to ensure fees are paid, permits are issued and all required documentation has been received prior to permit release; notifies clients of permit status updates; maintains file notes electronically in the permitting software database.
- Provides backup coverage for scheduling Safety Code inspections.
- Supports all Planning and Development staff; prepares correspondence, notifications, advertisements, mailing lists, schedules meetings; creates and reviews forms and other documents; sorts, processes and distributes mail.
- Assists in compiling monthly permit statistics.
- Maintains hardcopy and electronic file records.
- Maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the city and manages information appropriately and responsibly.
- Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives; participates in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits; ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System; reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.

Required Education and Experience:
- Diploma in Office Administration or Architectural Technology; Certificate in Applied Land Use Planning; or other relevant post-secondary education is considered an asset.
- Experience in a municipal building services or construction environment is considered an asset.
- Basic Knowledge of Alberta Safety Codes and Municipal Land Use Bylaw regulations, with an ability to read permit drawings, is considered an asset.
Required Certifications and/or Documentation:
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence and Driver’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
- Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.

- Proficiency with MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook); ability to quickly learn other software as required.
Working Conditions:
- Normal office conditions; long periods of sitting, reading and concentration.
- Must have a remote workstation.

Compensation: Pay Grade will be determined by position placement.
Pay: $27.11/hr. (you'll find the detailed information in Appendix A of the draft collective agreement)
Days of Work: Monday to Friday
