Position Summary:

As a Senior Municipal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role within our Infrastructure team, overseeing the review and approval of projects crucial to the city's development and operations. Drawing upon your extensive expertise in municipal engineering, you will ensure adherence to the highest standards of quality and compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead the review and approval process for final designs, ensuring alignment with municipal standards, codes, and regulations.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior staff, fostering their professional growth and development.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external consultants to resolve complex engineering challenges and optimize project outcomes.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of proposed infrastructure projects, evaluating their feasibility, sustainability, and impact on the community.
  • Oversee the preparation and presentation of engineering reports, drawings, and specifications for municipal projects.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in municipal engineering, offering insights and recommendations to support decision-making processes.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional teams and interdepartmental initiatives to enhance organizational effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to municipal engineering.
  • Acts as a model of the desire values, attitudes, skills and behaviors that contribute to a safe, ethical work environment.
  • Networks and facilitates partnerships with local, regional, provincial and federal subject matter experts and service providers, peers in other municipalities, consultants, developers, etc.
  • Participates in the assessment of the current and future needs of the Engineering team, gathering input and feedback, utilizing evaluation tools, analyzing and reporting statistical and evaluative data.
  • Appropriate and responsible use of confidential information; maintains confidentiality and security of all information related to the city.
  • Ensures a safe and healthy work environment for staff, visitors, the community and stakeholders, e.g., participates in workplace safety initiatives, participate in formal and informal worksite safety and environment inspections and audits, ensures compliance with the City’s Health and Safety Management System, reports and assists in the analysis of near misses or incidents.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in municipal engineering, with a focus on final design review and approval.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing complex engineering projects from conception to completion.
  • Extensive knowledge of municipal regulations, codes, and standards governing infrastructure development.

Required Certifications and/or Documentation:

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation, in good standing with APEGA.
  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence and Drive’s Abstract deemed satisfactory by the city.
  • Criminal Record Check deemed satisfactory by the city.

Working Conditions:

  • Normal office conditions; long periods of sitting, reading and concentration.
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours.
  • Occasional travel throughout the region in order to conduct site inspections, often outdoors.
